Thought I might add, for the first time in 16 years, I took enough sick days in a row to warrant a medical certificate. I didn't know what it was so I went to a random GP. She was perplexed so she tested for a bacterial infection before deciding if I needed antibiotics or not, then she asks if I need a medical certificate, how much sick leave I have, and if I wanted a week off. Not gonna say no to that and I think I'll keep her as my new GP as my last one retired. Ended up being the world's weirdest flu.

I'm always baffled when people in other countries explain what hoops they have to jump trough to stay at home when they are ill.
Here you just call in and say "I'm ill, I'll let you know when I'm back" and that's it.

If it takes a long time. i.e. longer than two weeks orso, meaning you've got something worse than the flu you get an invite to talk to a doctor which will be assigned by a special health agency (@Quark is that the right term? ) and from there on they will handle it.

Of course you go to your own doctor to get all the medical help you need, but you don't need any proof from them to call in sick.

It's a doctor who works for the allocation institute (in the Netherlands), who might bring you a visit, and then decides if, and how long.

In Belgium, I have to go to the GP and get a certificate.

Like when I was at a concert in Heerlen we noticed trees that had QR Codes on a plate in the floor giving you extra info on the tree in front of you - now... HOW FRIGGIN COOL IS THAT? Loved it^^ and all the water dispensers in Amsterdam... now that...

Also... we´ve just been passing through Almere on our way back from Lelystad Saturday a week ago. We visited a schoolfriend of mine who was at the camping ground my parents had a trailer on 25 years ago... it was super lovely ...will definately do that again. Loved the lil city tour through Almere on the way back, too.

well this time it was only to the nearest Mc Donalds and then onto the A6 back home as it was 11pm already but I enjoyed that^^
it was way better than back then ... my family has dogs (and cats) and well the thing with dogs not being allowed in the city centre annoys me to this day xD so it was nice to have a positive experience XD

I do like driving through NL - spech the suburbs and lil villages though... love the streets and scenery. Hubby gets an ebike soon, hope i do get one, too and then we might take lil tours (not as far as Almere though^^ 2.5hrs by car XD).

I think it depends on the employer. I called in sick for one shift with a cold at my first job at a fast food company. They wanted a medical certificate for one shift...the out-of-pocket expense for the doctor was not much less than one shift's worth of sick leave.
My current employer wants a medical certificate if you take more than three days off in a row.
I think the only real "laws" here are if you're permanent staff, then you get a certain amount of sick leave. I believe (or maybe it's just my department) full-time staff get 10 sick days per year. You don't get to cash them in when you finish your employment, but they stay with you until you die, so if you're re-employed your sick leave allowance stays where it was before.

I don't know whose policy it is, but also if a doctor gives you a certain amount of time off and you feel well before then, you need medical clearance to return to work early. You'd better believe the last couple of days of sick leave I took were mental health days.

I´m 41 and I will never be able to work again. I had shite jobs, low pay, even after I went back to school and after a job training... and because I was on timesharing mostly I frequently went to work when I should have been to the doc instead - of course resulting in a hefty flu which - also of course - resulted in me losing that timesharing gig cos I was out for too long (3 weeks). When I came to pick up my stuff there were 3 people doing my tasks when I was told to "ask if I needed help" only to get told "oh goddamnit Alex we´ve told you thrice!" I´ve had several burnouts and even took the initiative to poke the JobCentre for a re-training for better job perspectives. Weeeell that only worked out so well cos a trauma from a previous job resurfaced and I was thrown out - even though they had a reputation to be specialised with mental health issues (mhhh my arse they were)...
So after that I´m glad my husband earns enough for us to be able to to pretty well so I can be a housewife - which I finally start to be able to "work" as as my mental health finally picks up tremendously in the last few weeks and months... You @Alix taking mental health days is super awesome and I applaude you for watching yourself like that. Great rolemodel! Stuff like that helps you to be able to work!

Ah, not in Belgium!

You get a medical certificate (for minimum 3 days (weekend days included, if needed), but if you'll feel fit to work, no one is going to stop you. Just you'd be stupid to do so!

But depending on what you've got, s/he can give you "house arrest" for the sick leave! Meaning, you cannot go amywhere outside!! Not even your daily shopping! (if you should need it)

luckily nowadays you can get anything delivered within 24 hours, but still, that seems a bit ridiculous
